World Preeclampsia Day 2024
May is “Pre-eclampsia awareness month” and May 22nd is “World Pre-eclampsia Day”. This 2024, the Philippine Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine held its second “World Pre-eclampsia Day” community service activity after the pandemic. This was celebrated nationwide by our members, headed by the regional directors in order to raise awareness regarding pre-eclampsia as a life-threatening complication in pregnancy with the theme “Pag-igtingin ang kaalaman laban sa Pre-eclampsia” in line with the world theme of “Be prepared before lightning strikes”. In the Philippines, 30% of maternal deaths were caused by pre-eclampsia and eclampsia according to the Department of Health Statistics in 2017.
Our activity started with a maternal lay forum which enables women early recognition of pre-eclampsia symptoms in order to seek help from their healthcare providers. First trimester pre-eclampsia screening and other ultrasound services were offered to our pregnant women with fun activities and raffle prizes such as a blood pressure apparatus being the major prize to bring home our final message.
Together, we inspire, engage and collaborate to decrease the maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality of hypertension in pregnancy!
