EVIDENCE-BASED CARE OF PRETERM LABOR FOR THE PRACTICING CLINICIAN
REGIONAL CME: SOUTHERN LUZON
September 24, 2024
9:00 am to 12 noon
Venue: The Bellevue Manila, Alabang
Total Number of Participants: 100, in-person event

The last Regional CME for the year focused on Preterm Labor. The scientific program, Evidence-based Care of Preterm Labor for the Practicing Clinician, was held on September 24, 2024, at “The Bellevue Manila,” Alabang. Identifying patients at risk of preterm labor who will subsequently give birth preterm poses a significant clinical challenge despite preterm labor being a prevalent cause of hospitalization during pregnancy. The activity was attended by 100 POGS and PSMFM Region IV members.

Two experts graced this activity with respective lecture topics: Dr. Ma. Cristina P. Crisologo (Preterm Labor, Ultrasound, Biomarkers and Clinical Presentations), and Dr. Leah N. Socorro Rivera (Evidence-based Practice: Role of Progesterone and Tocolytics in Pregnancy).

Accurate detection of patients experiencing true preterm labor is essential for appropriately applying interventions that can significantly enhance neonatal outcomes. These interventions include antenatal corticosteroid therapy, short-term tocolysis, antibiotic prophylaxis against early-onset neonatal group B streptococcal infection, magnesium sulfate for neuroprotection, and, if necessary, the transfer of the mother to a facility equipped with an appropriate level of neonatal care. Equally crucial is the accurate identification of patients experiencing contractions but not in preterm labor, as this can help avoid unnecessary and sometimes costly interventions for the approximately 50 percent of patients with suspected (also called threatened) preterm labor who subsequently give birth at term without tocolytic therapy.

The speakers concisely delineate the clinical findings and diagnostic assessment of patients presenting with signs and symptoms of preterm labor, along with the initial management of those diagnosed with preterm labor, its incidence, risk factors, and prevention of preterm birth, as well as tocolytic therapy for preterm labor,

The activity was a success through the combined efforts of the PSMFM board of trustees, headed by Dr. Emerson D. Tan (President) and the officers of POGS Region IV, headed by Dr. Maria Cresenica R. Gacoba (President), as well as the CME Chair of each society namely: Dr. Trinilisa E.  Bagalso (PSMFM) and Dr. Eileen Feliz Cortes-Garcia (POGS Region IV), and the inspiring works of the PSMFM Southern Luzon Regional Director, Dr. Juliet A. Villanueva.
