Last June 2, 2018, the Philippine Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (PSMFM) held its first workshop on Electronic Fetal Monitoring, entitled, ” Electronic Fetal Monitoring Made Easy” at the Quezon City Sports Complex. It was well- attended, with over 200 participants, comprised of obstetricians, residents and fellows – in – training , perinatologists, and allied health care personnel. The workshop was officially opened by the Society’s President, Dr. Leah Rivera and the Course Overview was given by Dr. Emerson Tan.  In order to make electronic fetal monitoring more comprehensible for obstetricians and other health providers, the Society, delivered a series lectures in the morning by renowned experts in the field such as Dr. Ramon Reyles, Dr. Leah Rivera, Dr. Gumersinda Javier, Dr. Valerie Guinto, Dr. Cara Madrigal- Dy,  Dr. Lucia Tiangco, Dr. Emerson Tan, Dr. Marjorie Santos, Dr. Sherri Suplido and Dr. Irene Quinio. The topics were all comprehensive from Physiology, to Instrumentation, Interpretation of the Cardiotocgraphic trace, to Resuscitation and Management.

During the afternoon, the participants were broken down into groups for the interactive discussion and trace interpretation. The Society adopted the latest International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) consensus guidelines on intrapartum fetal monitoring.  Actual traces were shown and reviewed,  facilitated by various maternal fetal medicine specialists.

At the end of the year, the PSMFM  will be  launching a book , bearing the same title, with the goal of strengthening the knowledge of the obstetrician and the health care provider, as well as hone their skills in EFM interpretation, to improve maternal and perinatal outcomes.
